A short zip closes the centre back. The waist seam is kept narrow, so it marks the middle without a belt. A narrow waist seam marks the middle on its own. The waist seam sits narrow, which defines the middle. The skirt is gathered at the seam, which gives it something to fall from. Gathering at the seam keeps the skirt from pulling flat.
